Brighton Beach is the best-known Russian-speaking neighbourhood in the United States, and the paperwork that comes with it is specific. Soviet-era birth certificates printed in two languages, marriage certificates from a ZAGS office that no longer exists under that name, labour books (трудовая книжка) with thirty years of stamps, diplomas from institutes renamed after 1991, and pension or medical records that a US agency, school or insurer now wants in English.
We translate from Russian and from Uzbek, and we read the handwriting. A certificate of accuracy signed by the translator is attached to every translation, and a New York notary notarizes the translator’s signature — the format USCIS, courts, universities and most state agencies ask for. Two things are easier when the translator is nearby. First, originals: if a court, a consulate or a school insists on a wet-ink signature and an embossed seal, you can collect the packet instead of waiting for the post. Second, apostilles: a document going back to Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan or Belarus usually needs a New York apostille, and we file those in person at the county clerk and the Department of State rather than mailing them across the country.
